Outlaws FAQ

Common Questions

See some common questions and answers below, or reach out to us if you have any other questions.

  • Is Outlaw Baseball a non-profit organization?

Currently Outlaw baseball is not a nonprofit 501(C)3 organization. As we grow we will evaluate that in the future.

  • Does your program allow players to "play up"?

We believe each player should play in his respective age group and this is what we practice. At the travel level, moving players up reduces the competitive strength of the team losing the player, and puts that team at a competitive disadvantage. We will allow players who are one year too young (9) to try out for the 10U development team. If the player makes that team, he will be allowed to “play up” for one year. After one year, this player will be required to play for his own age group. Exceptions to this rule will be made on an extremely limited basis (e.g., for players who are so dominant that they would pose an injury threat to the other players).

  • Are Outlaw players expected to play MCYBA (MC little league)?

All Outlaw players that live in Mason City are expected to be a part of the MCYBA. Part of our mission is to make sure baseball is available to all and if our players do not play MCYBA, it seriously threatens the viability of that program. Scheduling will be set so participation is possible.

  • What does the schedule look like?

Here is a high level view of our annual calendar. Specifics will be communicated to players by their coaches.

         a. Winter (Jan – March). Indoor winter practices at The Yard 2-3 times per week led by team coaches and Mohawk    coaching staff

         b. Spring (April – Early July). Travel tournaments, double headers, and 1-2 practices per week.

         c. Summer (Aug – Sept). Limited fall travel tournaments (1-3). *when tournaments are available

         d. Fall (Oct – Dec). Time off, personalized lessons

  • How many players on a team?

We would like there to be 11 players on a roster. This number is ideal, but not always attainable. Rosters are capped at 12 players.

  • Are there different levels of teams per age group?

Ideally, there will be 2 teams per age grouping. 1 team that plays at the AA level and 1 team that plays at that the AAA/Major level. Our goal would be to have 2 teams at each level play at the AAA/Major level.

  • Can our family go on a vacation in July or August?

Of course families should plan and schedule vacations as appropriate. Although we expect that the commitment to the Outlaws will require significant time, we understand families’ needs to plan and schedule vacations and other family activities.

  • Will players be rotated through different positions through the season?

Players will play more than one position during the season. The primary goal of the program is to develop overall baseball skills. Players will have an opportunity to work on their skills at any position they would like to learn.

  • Can my child play on different travel teams?

No. Outlaw players are not permitted to play for a second travel baseball team at any point during the season, which runs from the fall through the spring/summer. There are many reasons for this policy. First, we want to protect players from overuse of their arms, and playing on multiple travel baseball teams (in addition to MCYBA) makes that difficult. Moreover, travel baseball programs often overlap at critical points, forcing players to choose one travel team over another. This is not a positive situation for either team. Finally, because our program seeks to build team camaraderie over the course of a year-long season, it is not possible to play Outlaw baseball only in the fall season. Players who accept roster spots with are making a commitment to their teammates and coaches to play with the Outlaws through the fall and spring/summer seasons.

  • When is sign up for the Outlaws?

Sign up to play on The Yard Outlaws travel team takes place in early December each year.

  • How much does it cost to play on the Outlaws travel team?

Fees are $65/month. This covers a 12-month yard membership, tournament fees, and developmental lessons given by Mason City Mohawk baseball coaches from January-March. Players are responsible for the cost of their uniforms, hats will be provided by the Outlaw Program.
